Software to Manage Events and Giving

4 Steps Your Church Can Take to Go Green & Save Money

The concept of “going green” may sound overwhelming. With so much discussion about making less of an impact on the environment and being good stewards of our resources, where do we even begin? Here are four ideas your church should implement this week to save natural resources and cash:

  1. Set up recycling bins next to vending machines and trash cans throughout the church building. When people are purchasing soda, bottled water, or snacks they have a visual reminder to recycle instead of throw trash away. Instead of just mindlessly tossing used paper and plastic in the trash can, having a nearby recycling bin is a great reminder to reduce, reuse, and recycle!

  2. Start utilizing ServiceU’s Green software. Input your church building’s thermostat settings on a user-friendly online calendar and manage settings anywhere internet access is available. By using this software you can eliminate wasted heating and cooling, save 10-20% in HVAC costs, and make sure events are always temperature-perfect.

  3. Implement digital bulletins and newsletters. Printing weekly bulletins and monthly newsletters on paper is simply no longer a necessary medium for church communication. Move those announcements to email...or even mobile! According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, one-third of the country’s waste is paper. By eliminating the use of paper for regular church communication, it is not only better for the environment but also saves saves hundreds of dollars annually.

  4. Replace incandescent light bulbs with compact fluorescent bulbs (CFLs). These light bulbs consume about 75% less electricity and last 10 times longer. Again, this saves resources and is a wiser financial decision.

What eco-friendly changes has your church already made?
