Software to Manage Events and Giving

ServiceU Leadership

Tim Whitehorn, President and CEO

“From the beginning of my career, working the night shift at FedEx, to founding and selling my own telecommunications company, and finally to opening the doors and serving as CEO for ServiceU, I have been blessed with a broad range of experience. This experience has given me insight into every aspect of running a business; my day-to-day familiarity with customer service management, engineering, software development and sales are what have given me the know-how to successfully start and operate ServiceU since 1997.

I began my career during college while working night shift in the FedEx hub. This position, while tedious at the time, led me to assisting in the development of the first computerized method for managing the assignment of sorting locations within the hub. I went on to work in customer service in the ZapMail division, which turned out to be a short-lived venture, but was successful in teaching me the valuable lesson of customer service that made FedEx one of the most highly regarded companies in the United States.

I went on to found a startup company in the telecommunication industry that provided long distance telephone service to businesses through the mid-south. This venture grew to more than 60 employees and continued to grow after I sold the company in 1996. I stayed on as regional vice president of sales and learned a valuable lesson: the bureaucracy and red tape of a large organization can hinder initiative and productivity.

After selling my previous venture in 1996, I founded ServiceU Corporation in 1997. ServiceU began by building custom web software applications on a consulting basis; one project led to the development of a scheduling system that ultimately became the company’s flagship product, EventU.
Though we faced obstacles in the early years, we have grown today to succeed in our niche market of providing top-tier web-based software technology solutions that meet the needs of growing churches, schools, non-profits, and ministries all over the world.

During my career I’ve been involved in community organizations such as the 100 Club where I sit on the board of directors, my local church, Bellevue Baptist, where I serve in a wide range of roles including deacon, Bible study teacher, children’s ministry volunteer, and member of numerous committees. My wife and I have three boys, and love being involved with their schools and sporting events"

David P. Smith, Chief Technology Officer

"As the chief technology officer since 2000, I have the opportunity to work with extremely talented IT professionals in a fast-paced, cutting-edge environment each and every day. I'm responsible for managing the development of new products, security compliance, and IT infrastructure, as well as working directly with Microsoft on the development of new server products. I have degrees in Spanish, Economics, and Management Information Systems (MIS) from Harding University.

Aside from my passion for technology, I love to travel and have spent significant amounts of time in Chile, Honduras, Africa, and Mexico for both non-profit and professional work. I also love to jump out of airplanes, logging several hundred skydives per year. While jumping, I keep busy by shooting video and taking still images in freefall for tandem skydivers."

Mark Erickson, VP of Operations & Finance

"As vice president of operations and finance since 2009, I have found great joy in becoming a part of the ServiceU team—a diverse group of people that all come together to serve our clients in the best way possible.

A graduate of Auburn University, I have worked in public accounting and corporate finance, and have been on church staff as a business administrator and director of finance and human resources.

When I'm not crunching the numbers, I enjoy spending time with my sweet wife Kim and our three children. I also love playing the keyboard in the praise band at our church—music inspires me and keeps me focused."

Russell Daws, VP of Sales, Marketing, and Business Development

“I began working with ServiceU late in 2010, and have greatly enjoyed ‘plugging in’ to my role as VP of Business Development and Marketing. With more than 20 years in leadership, sales, marketing, and management positions in various industries and sectors including nonprofit, banking, finance, software, and logistics, I aim to impact ServiceU by boosting our sales efforts through concentrated marketing efforts within the church and software markets, while working to solidify and grow our company’s affiliate relationships. Previously, I was Head of International Sales for an asset-allocation software firm, worked with a Christian nonprofit, was Senior VP of Commerce Bank, started and ran four small businesses, and worked with FedEx as a Regional Sales Manager. Currently, I’m working on my masters of theology at Covenant Theological Seminary. When I’m not forming new business relationships, I’m spending time with my wife of 22 years and our four teenage children…..it is never dull!!”

Colin Neller, Director of Software Development

In the five years I’ve worked with ServiceU, I’ve had the unique opportunity to work with extremely gifted people who truly love what they do. My role in the Development team allows me to have a hand in a variety of aspects of the company, from product design, to strategic direction and engineering leadership. Ultimately, my priority is to ensure that the product we’re building is fulfilling our customers’ needs.

I studied Computer Science and Management at Harding University and have IT experience in several different industries. Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with my wife and two daughters, and take advantage of any opportunity to be outdoors playing sports or disc golf.

Jason Elder, Client Services Manager

"I joined ServiceU in early 2009 and now enjoy leading the charge for Client Services. We’ve got an awesome team of folks who are customer-focused and go beyond the call of duty. Before working with ServiceU, I was on pastoral staff at a church in Marin County, California, I have also been a part of two church plants – one in the San Francisco Bay Area and one in Memphis, TN. I know how crucial it is to make online donations and registrations available and as easily accessible as possible. I come to work with the desire to make our team better and your experience with ServiceU and our products outstanding. When I'm not working, I enjoy the urban life with my wife, Barbara, and our daughter, Violet. I love the Los Angeles Lakers, gardening, documentaries, and riding my 1978 Honda motorcycle—rain or shine."
